A Yellow Elegance
Watercolor on paper
Original artwork
by Bosen Zhang (Age14)

Within the vast collection of North American birds, the Yellow-Throated Warbler stands as a symbol of grace. With its captivating yellow throat and harmonic melodies, this small songbird adds a splash of color to nature’s canvas, making it a beloved inhabitant of North American forests.
This warbler has a black face with a broad white eye strip, and black streaking on its sides. Their heads are heavily patterned in black and white, with a long supercilium. Though, one of the distinctive features of the Yellow-Throated Warbler is its striking yellow throat. This vivid yellow not only serves as a visual treat for observers, but also as a key identification in the bird world.
Aside from its beautiful appeal, the Yellow-Throated Warbler is renowned for its melodic songs. The male warbler’s song is a delightful mix of high-pitched notes and trills, usually serving both as declaring one’s territory, and attracting a mate, a demonstration to the complex ways in which nature speaks. Furthermore, the warbler’s song changes and adapts to the various habitats it encounters on its migration. This unique ability to attune its song based on the location, highlights the bird’s adaptability and its potential in traversing through different landscapes.
Regarding the environment, these warblers are mainly found in mature deciduous and mixed forests such as pines, oaks, and sycamores. The tall trees provide suitable nesting sites where these nests are typically positioned in the forks of the branches, which also provides a secure location for nurturing their offspring. Not only does the thick forest canopy shield the nests from potential predators, it also creates a shaded, cool environment, keeping the fragile eggs and hatchlings in an atmosphere that is relatively steady.
In terms of foraging, note that these warblers were once named “Yellow-Throated Creeper,” for its habit of creeping along branches when rummaging, or when searching for insects in the crevices of tree trunks. The bird uses its quick and graceful foraging skills to collect insects from leaves by darting from branch to branch. This behavior draws attention to its role in natural pest control, supporting the forest’s ecological balance.
I chose to paint this incredible, fascinating bird in watercolor these past weeks, not because of its elegance and beauty, but also for its unique features and their enchanting songs echoing amidst the branches and leaves. This bird possesses an eccentric combination of visual and auditory elements that made it captivating for me. Shown in the painting, I included numerous pine needles, in relation to its one of many habitats. Moreover, the Yellow-Throated Warbler’s behavior offered me an opportunity to convey a sense of vitality in the painting. In choosing this bird for a painting, I embraced the challenge of capturing not just the physical characteristics, but also its connection to its habitat.
In essence, I saw the Yellow-Throated Warbler as the most enthralling bird from the rest in the list. In choosing this bird, the result was not just a motionless portrayal, but a lively painting that reflects on the intricacy of this extraordinary songbird.

This oil painting captures the essence of the blacksmith’s craft as if it is suspended between the past and the present. The blacksmith sits on an 18th century workbench as a figure of unwavering focus. His hefty build is framed by a small, timeworn anvil and the array of tools around him. As light and shadow interact, they bring out the fine details of his labor.

Bosen Zhang is a thirteen year old boy in the 7th grade. He doesn’t enjoy speaking in 3rd person but he’ll do it anyways only for introducing himself. Drawing was one of his hobbies and the only thing he was actually decent at, but apparently he’s starting to take it more seriously. Bosen enjoys playing video games when he has nothing else to do other than studying. His favorite things to draw are animals, food, landscapes, and definitely not anything to do with portraits unless he’s having a good day.
